Explore Loreto > Places In Loreto > Sea Lions in Baja California | Coronado Island

Baja California protects and offers an ideal environment for several sea lion colonies, most of which thrive in protected ecosystems.
Within the Bahía de Loreto National Park, Isla Coronado stands out as one of the most accessible and vibrant sites to observe these sea lion colonies.

A Sea Lion Colony at Isla Coronado, Baja California.

On the northern side of Isla Coronado, along its rocky cliffs, there is a healthy colony of sea lions that includes territorial males, breeding females, and numerous pups that join each year during May and June.

This is an area where you can swim alongside them with snorkeling gear.

In addition, the island’s landscape, the sea lion colony, and the crystal-clear waters provide an ideal setting for a family photo session.

Snorkeling and Diving Experience with Sea Lions.

Our tour to Isla Coronado includes safe navigation to the island, snorkeling with sea lions, and exploration of pristine beaches, seabirds, and other marine wildlife.

The best season to swim with these animals is from mid-October to the end of May, with a break during the summer due to the breeding season and increased territorial behavior from males.

Water conditions are generally calm, with shallow reefs and good visibility for beginners and experienced swimmers alike.

Conservation and Important Recommendations.

Isla Coronado is part of a protected area designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, ensuring its ecological preservation.

It is important to follow responsible practices: do not feed sea lions, keep a minimum distance, follow instructions from certified guides, and respect natural resting areas.

There have been documented cases of animals injured by abandoned fishing lines, highlighting the need for increased monitoring and rescue measures in these protected areas.
